At the gloriously idiosyncratic I.B. Tauris publishers, I commissioned books on film and television studies, as well as project managing an art series on drawing. Here I looked closer at the nuances of writing and began copyediting manuscripts to adhere not just to house style, but to clarify ideas, structure an argument, maintain accurate grammar and keep the reader engaged with concise language that would best showcase original and complex research.
 

I decided to travel. There was no need to worry about making the break, as quickly I could see how my experiences in south/south-east Africa and east Asia would benefit my future engagement with text. Whilst indulging in the sensory pleasures of travel, I also learnt about British colonisation, religious and spiritual beliefs, local and regional art, censorship, national traumas like genocide, and the grave impact of global warming. This on-the-ground understanding of global issues and other cultures has left me confident in fact-checking text but also sensitive to differences between peoples – their writing, their voices.
 

When abroad in Italy, I trained in teaching English as a second language. My CELTA certificate further enhanced my detailed knowledge of English linguistic systems. 
 

Now, as a freelancer offering my editorial services in proofreading, copyediting and copywriting, I apply this lifetime of skills to my projects.
